Chakra System Workshop
with Margo Kane
Fridays - April 3, 2015 – May 8, 2015
12:00 pm – 1:45 pm

In this six week workshop series we will learn about our 7 chakras, or energy centers, and why they are important in our yoga practice. We will use meditation, asana, pranayama, and some student/teacher interaction as we begin understanding the role of our chakras both on, and off the mat. For each chakra there will be a lesson on its governing qualities, how to recognize an imbalance, and the yoga poses we can do in order to bring harmony back into our body.

A Weekend with Amber Karnes
with Amber Karnes
Friday, Saturday and Sunday - August 24–26, 2015

Amber Karnes is an aspiring yogi, RYT-200 yoga asana teacher, and a lifelong student of her body. For Amber, yoga has been an integral part of a decade-long journey toward self-acceptance and body positivity – a journey of making peace with her body and helping others to do the same. In Amber’s classes and workshops, students of all shapes and sizes will find tips, tricks, and modifications to make yoga asana work for their unique body, instead of being squished into poses for the sake of form over function. She emphasizes safe alignment and mindful transitions, and gives each student permission to honor the body they bring to the mat today, while being empowered to learn about the body’s intelligence and power. Amber is a big fan of “yoga in non-yoga places” like libraries, parks, and festivals and often teaches free, accessible classes in her community. She is currently leading a 6-week beginners yoga and mindfulness series for people living with HIV. Amber also serves on the Advisory Council for Women’s Power Space where she seeks to further the message of inclusivity, consent, agency, body positivity, and accessibility for women on and off the mat. She blogs at bodypositiveyoga.com.

Body Positive Yoga: Make yoga work for your body
Saturday - August 15, 2015
10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Have you ever been frustrated in a yoga class – not because you couldn’t do the poses, but because you felt squished or balled up, instead of spacious and open? You probably just need a few simple tricks to make the poses work for your body! If you’re in a larger body, a yoga class can be a wonderful place to make peace with your body and yourself. It can also be pure torture when accommodations aren’t made for your larger belly, legs, or chest. This workshop is designed especially for big-bodied yogis who want to be empowered to step into any class with confidence, knowing they have the tools to make yoga work for their bodies. In this workshop, we’ll explore things like: How to keep your boobs out of your face, twisting and folding when you have a belly, and other “sticky spots” like sun salutations and inversions. We’ll help each other find safe alignment and freedom in poses, learn to modify yoga to fit our bodies, and have some laughs along the way. Yoga teachers who’d like to learn modifications for your larger students are also welcome!

For Yoga Teachers: Body Positive Yoga: Teaching Yoga to All Bodies
Saturday - August 15, 2015
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Have you ever had a student in a larger body show up to your class, and didn’t know what to do with them? Or maybe you just aren’t sure how to offer modifications to them in a way that doesn’t single them out. Or perhaps you’d just like to see more body diversity in your classes. This workshop will combine discussion with practical asana instruction. We’ll discuss debunking stereotypes, ways to make your classes more inclusive for all bodies, and how to create an environment of safety, agency, and consent. We’ll also cover plenty of asana modifications and ways to use yoga props to help your larger bodied students get the most out of their practice. I’ll speak from my experience as both a larger-bodied yoga student and teacher, and together we’ll build a toolbox of ideas that will make your classes a more welcoming environment. Bring any and all questions that you might hesitate to ask your students about how to make the practice work for them – we’ll troubleshoot them together in this body-positive yoga lab setting.
