Introduction to Mantra: the Relationship Between Chanting Mantra and Your Yoga Practice with Emily Unwin

Chanting mantra (a Sanskrit phrase that encapsulates a higher idea within the essence of its sound) is a tradition that spans over thousands of years. If you’ve been to a yoga class, it’s likely that you’ve chanted Om to begin or end a class. You are already practicing mantra! In this workshop, you will dive deeper into the elements of mantra and learn the relationship between mantra and asana (yoga postures).

Yoga for Musicians

Yoga for Musicians

Join Nicole Agostino, DM, RYT-200 to learn how to incorporate yoga into your music practice. Benefits include tension relief, healthier alignment, injury prevention, and a deeper mind-body connection. Bring your instrument, a yoga mat if you have one, and wear comfortable clothes that you can move in. No yoga experience is required.

Physical health and mental focus are crucial for musicians, who depend on their bodies for the creation of their art. A musician’s lifestyle demands many hours of practice, which is physically fatiguing and mentally taxing. Over time, postural habits may lead to misalignments and tension. A discipline complementary to music, yoga helps to relieve tension, balance postural tendencies, promote healthier alignment and greater physical ease, as well as maintain mental presence and calm under stress.

This workshop is designed to:
-Address and improve common postural habits among instrumentalists and singers
-Incorporate yoga in music practice to promote long-term health and injury prevention
-Explore different breathing exercises to sharpen mental focus and maintain greater physical ease
-Use visualization to deepen the mind-body connection and to serve as a tool for performance preparation
-Further one’s embodiment at the instrument

Nicole Agostino has been studying the piano since age 3 and also brings over 15 years of teaching experience to the field. She earned her doctorate in piano performance from Florida State University, and her masters and undergraduate degrees, also in piano performance, from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. In addition to music, Nicole began teaching yoga in 2013 and will complete her RYT-500 certification in November, 2016. Nicole enjoys the many benefits that her yoga practice brings to her life as a musician. In her personal work to bring yoga to the keyboard, she has become passionate about teaching the mind-body connection to musicians of all instruments. Yoga promotes health of the whole self, which Nicole finds to be the perfect complement to the physical, mental, and emotional realms of playing music.

I lived and studied in Chiang Mai, Thailand with my teacher, Chongkol Setthakorn, as well as with several other rishi's in my 2years of living there. Spine Clinic: Building Better Backbends

A flexible spine can yield a longer, healthier life! This curvy column of vertebrae is responsible for rotation, flexion, extension, as well as lateral movement. It bends in so many ways that without careful attention, misuse is common which can result in injury.

This two-hour workshop helps you build a pain-free backbend, unlocking the potential for greater movement in your tightest spots, (and more stability in your most collapsible spots!). We'll talk in basic language about the anatomy of the spine, and use both passive and active backbends to try out some techniques designed to help you feel more in touch with how your spine works. We will also address the neck, or cervical spine, to help you gaze upward with less tension. Appropriate for all levels!

Spine Clinic: Keeping the Low Back Safe in Forward Folds + Twists

We bend forward all day long--to drive, to pick things up from the floor, to put our socks on, etc. And because of all the time we spend in this position (think: sitting in a desk chair) lower back pain, including bulging and herniated discs, are increasingly common.

This two hour clinic looks at the anatomy of the spine and teaches skillful alignment for the simple act of bending forward: in both yoga and life. We also address twisting postures (spinal rotation).

All are welcome to this clinic, both brand new yoga students and seasoned yogis/teachers alike.

Spine Clinic: Shoulder Stand & Headstand

When performed skillfully (and, in some cases, with props like blankets, blocks, and chairs), Sirsasana (Headstand) and Salamba Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand) yield a multitude of benefits, including: improved circulation; strengthening the muscles around the spine, as well as in the arms, back, and core; stimulating thyroid function; increasing clarity by stimulating the nervous system, and more. When safe alignment is missing, however, these postures create some risk of injury, particularly in the cervical spine (neck).

Join Peach Friedman, E-RYT 500, for a 2-hour Spine Clinic. She’ll break down the basic anatomy & key components of these postures so that you understand how to practice them safely (and why it’s vital to do so!). We’ll explore various ways to get into the poses with and without props, and the specific precautions to bear in mind as you practice. Current yoga teachers will learn how to give extra attention to their students when teaching these poses, and when to recommend skipping them altogether.

Some yoga experience suggested.

Shoulder Clinic II - Arm Balances and Binds

Held in our Opelika location!

In Shoulder Clinic I, you learn how to keep your shoulders safe through the common vinyasa, which includes the postures Adho Mukha Svanasana, Chaturanga Dandasana, and Urdhva Mukha Svanasana. In Shoulder Clinic II, we'll use many of the same actions required in those postures, and apply them to arm balances, including poses like Parsva Bakasana, Eka Pada Koundinyasana II, Vasistasana, and Visvamitrasana if we have time. In addition, we'll examine how the shoulders functions in binding postures, including standing & seated binds, and why it's important to take good care of this joint in these positions. We'll specifically look at positions such as Paschima Namaskarasana (reverse namaste) and other "behind the back" binds.

Some yoga experience recommended. Shoulder Clinic I recommended but not required. Go here to register: https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/classic/admhome?studioid=28078

Hip Clinic: Stability & Mobility

Hip Clinic: Stability & Mobility

Your hips are the largest joints in your body, with potential for a fair amount of mobility. Due to habits from sitting, standing, and general postural imbalances, the tissue surrounding the hip joint can become tight, limiting the joint’s actual range of motion. This results in stiffness from the lower back down, and can incite injury. Likewise, over-stretched hips that lack the strength required to stabilize the joint are also prone to aggravation. In this two-hour workshop you will learn the anatomy of your hip joint, and enjoy a sequence designed to both stretch & strengthen your hips. We’ll look at how the hips function in yoga postures you’re already familiar with, and have time for Q&A.
