Yoga for Musicians

Join Nicole Agostino, DM, RYT-200 to learn how to incorporate yoga into your music practice. Benefits include tension relief, healthier alignment, injury prevention, and a deeper mind-body connection. Bring your instrument, a yoga mat if you have one, and wear comfortable clothes that you can move in. No yoga experience is required.

Physical health and mental focus are crucial for musicians, who depend on their bodies for the creation of their art. A musician’s lifestyle demands many hours of practice, which is physically fatiguing and mentally taxing. Over time, postural habits may lead to misalignments and tension. A discipline complementary to music, yoga helps to relieve tension, balance postural tendencies, promote healthier alignment and greater physical ease, as well as maintain mental presence and calm under stress.

This workshop is designed to:
-Address and improve common postural habits among instrumentalists and singers
-Incorporate yoga in music practice to promote long-term health and injury prevention
-Explore different breathing exercises to sharpen mental focus and maintain greater physical ease
-Use visualization to deepen the mind-body connection and to serve as a tool for performance preparation
-Further one’s embodiment at the instrument

Nicole Agostino has been studying the piano since age 3 and also brings over 15 years of teaching experience to the field. She earned her doctorate in piano performance from Florida State University, and her masters and undergraduate degrees, also in piano performance, from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. In addition to music, Nicole began teaching yoga in 2013 and will complete her RYT-500 certification in November, 2016. Nicole enjoys the many benefits that her yoga practice brings to her life as a musician. In her personal work to bring yoga to the keyboard, she has become passionate about teaching the mind-body connection to musicians of all instruments. Yoga promotes health of the whole self, which Nicole finds to be the perfect complement to the physical, mental, and emotional realms of playing music.
